The LASU Alternative Dispute Resolution Society (LADRS) is a student organization situated at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos, Nigeria. It was founded in 2019 by John Ojelabi Olaitan to improve career awareness and equip and train students with the necessary skills required in alternative dispute resolution in addition to litigation and advocacy skills. Khairat Bashorun served as the society’s first president. She was succeeded by Abdulganiy Abdulganiy who was later succeeded by Oluwatoba James Abu, who was then succeeded by Naomi Kadiri, the society’s current president. The society is now comprised of over seventy (100) devoted and talented members.
The LASU ADR Society is known for organizing its annual grande resort competition and arbitration moot competition members of the society participating in, in its last edition last year the winners were awarded a cash prize of 100 (One Hundred Thousand Naira), the first runner up, 70 (Seventy Thousand Naira), the second runner up, 30(ThirtyThousand Naira), the third runner up, 20 (Twenty Thousand Naira), the participants participated in teams.
The Society is also known for having its members recognized not just nationally but internationally as well in competitions and various ADR related events, such as;
1. Special Recognition of a Student Counsel at the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) International Arbitration Moot Competition, 2022.
2. Special Invitation of members of the society to serve as rappateurs at the African Construction Law (ACL) Conference, 2022.
3. Partnership with Nciarb for it’s training and certification programs.
4. Special Invitation of the Society to the 7th ICC Africa Conference on International Arbitration.
5. Top Ten Advocates at the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) International Arbitration Competition, 2023.
6. First runner up at the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) National Moot Competition.
The Society also organizes valuable and insightful conferences and webinars such as the ADR symposium 2023 in partnership with the Lasusu High Court, Online webinar on Mediation as a mechanism in ADR and status of its pertinence at Intellectual Property, Energy Sector and Maritme Disputes.
The ADR is not just a society in the Lagos state university’s Faculty of Law, with the passing of the Lagos State University ADR Centre rules by the Chief Judge of the Lasusu High Court, the ADR society now serves as a center where the court can refer disputes between students too.
Finally, being fully aware of the intricacies and flexibility of Alternative Dispute Resolution, membership into the society is now open to student of the Peace Studies Department, faculty of arts, Lagos State University.
